“Political justice has locked up many political leaders in prison, while others are awaiting repeated sentences. I sincerely hope that my country will return to the European path and achieve remarkable democratic progress,” said Gigi Tsereteli, Chairman of the “European Georgia” party, during his speech at the European People’s Party (EPP) Political Assembly.

Tsereteli spoke about the situation in Georgia and drew special attention to the condition of Elene Khoshtaria.

“In recent days, we have been particularly concerned about the health condition of our colleague and friend, a mother of four children and one of the leaders of the democratic opposition, Elene Khoshtaria. She remains in prison because of an inscription made on an election banner. Even access to proper medical care has become a struggle for her.

We understand that the responsibility for democratic changes belongs to the Georgian people. Society and our people have shown extraordinary courage. For more than two years, thousands of citizens have been peacefully protesting every day, demanding free and fair elections to end the repression — defending Georgia’s European future, European values, and security.

The vast majority of Georgian society continues to support European Union membership. According to all polls, this is the democratic choice of our people — it is our constitutional choice.

I am confident that the EPP will continue to support Georgia and will keep supporting those people who defend democracy, freedom, and the rule of law.

I sincerely hope that my country will return to the European path and achieve remarkable democratic progress as a free and truly European Georgia,” Gigi Tsereteli stated.
