Today ALDE will discuss a critical resolution that once again states that the European Union and its member states are on the side of the Georgian people, on the side of our democratic struggle, — this was stated by one of the leaders of “Lelo – Strong Georgia,” Grigol Gegelia, who is attending the ALDE Congress in Vienna.
According to him, ALDE understands well that the Georgian people are defending their freedom and democracy and therefore deserve to retain such an important mechanism as visa-free travel.
“They understand well that the Georgian people are different from the criminal regime, that this people is defending freedom, democracy, and the European and national future, and that is why the resolution calls on the European Union not to take away from the Georgian people the very important instrument of visa-free travel because of the regime’s actions, because the people deserve it,” Gegelia stated.
For information: According to the draft resolution, while the wider region is reducing Russia’s influence, the ruling party of Georgia has turned its governance into Russia’s last stronghold and satellite in Eastern Europe.
The draft resolution states that ALDE recognizes the unwavering loyalty of the Georgian people to their desire to become a member of the European Union.
The draft resolution expresses concern about the series of arrests carried out in the recent period, which are directed against both politicians and participants in rallies. In this context, the resolution mentions, among others, the doctor Giorgi Chakhunashvili, as well as the leader of “Droa,” Elene Khoshtaria, and the Secretary General of “Strategy Aghmashenebeli,” Paata Manjgaladze.
The ALDE draft resolution calls on EU leaders and European states to impose personal sanctions both on those responsible for the democratic regression in the country and for serious human rights violations, as well as on the enablers and financing networks of the “Ivanishvili regime.”
The ALDE also recommends maintaining a clear distinction between the regime and the population of Georgia by not revoking visa-free travel for Georgian citizens.
