ALDE adopted a resolution on Georgia, — the party “Droa,” which is present at the Congress of the “Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe” (ALDE Party) in Vienna, distributes this information.

In the resolution “Supporting the Georgian People’s Struggle for Democracy Against Authoritarian Captivity and Alliance with Russia,” ALDE notes that while the wider region is increasingly freeing itself from Russia’s influence, Ivanishvili’s regime has turned its governance into Russia’s last stronghold and satellite in Eastern Europe, deliberately severing ties with the democratic world and destroying the country’s democratic achievements.

ALDE recognizes the unwavering courage, determination, and loyalty of the Georgian people in their desire to become a member of the European family. Georgia will become a member state of the European Union.

ALDE also expresses concern:

About the deterioration of democracy and the destruction of independent state institutions;

About the latest politically motivated arrests directed against participants in protests, students, and medical professionals, among whom is the doctor Giorgi Chakhunashvili;

About the unlawful detention of prominent political figures, among whom are members of parties associated with ALDE, such as Elene Khoshtaria, whose rapidly deteriorating health condition requires immediate attention, and the Secretary General of “Strategy Aghmashenebeli,” Paata Manjgaladze;

About the systematic targeting of leaders of political parties associated with ALDE in Georgia, who are either unlawfully detained or will face politically motivated criminal charges in the coming months.

ALDE calls on EU leaders and European states to:

Take decisive measures and establish a very clear, uncompromising policy toward the Ivanishvili regime.

Impose immediate targeted personal sanctions on individuals responsible for serious human rights violations, democratic regression, and the orchestration of political repressions.

Activate strict financial sanctions against persons who enable the regime, as well as its financing and support networks;

Demand that the Georgian authorities immediately ensure adequate, systematic, and outcome-oriented medical treatment for Elene Khoshtaria and ensure the immediate release of all political prisoners.

Use all available diplomatic, political, and economic instruments to actively express solidarity with the Georgian people in their struggle for freedom.

Clearly distinguish between the regime and the citizens of Georgia by opposing any general suspension of the visa-free regime and focusing on targeted sanctions against persons responsible for repressions.

ALDE condemns the ongoing annexation of Georgia’s sovereign territories and attempts to incorporate the occupied Tskhinvali region/South Ossetia.
