Former Defense Minister Bacho Akhalaya, who was charged over a phrase said in court - “Bidzina Ivanishvili and his government must be overthrown,” has been found guilty by the court.
This decision was made by Judge Romeo Tkeshelashvili of the Tbilisi City Court.
By his decision, Bacho Akhalaya was sentenced to 2.6 years of imprisonment.
Akhalaya did not attend the announcement of the verdict and, accordingly, did not use the right to the final word.
For information, Bacho Akhalaya was charged for the phrase said in court: “I believe that Bidzina Ivanishvili and his government must be overthrown.”
Akhalaya’s charge was presented under Article 317 of the Criminal Code of Georgia, which implies a call for the violent change of Georgia’s constitutional order and the overthrow of state power. This punishment provides for imprisonment of up to 3 years.
