The Georgian National Energy and Water Supply Regulatory Commission (GNERC) has launched an investigation into the causes of the large-scale accident that occurred in Georgia’s electricity system on July 24.

According to GNERC, due to the urgent nature of the matter, the commission considered the issue at a public session and adopted a decision on the immediate investigation of the causes of the accident.

Under the decision, the GNERC investigation team has been granted unrestricted access to data and relevant information held by regulated enterprises as part of the inquiry.

The commission said that at approximately 12:10 a.m. on July 24, a system-wide emergency outage in the country’s energy system caused disruptions to electricity and telecommunications networks. As a result, electricity supply was temporarily interrupted in Tbilisi and most regions of Georgia.
