According to the Young Lawyers Association, the European Court of Human Rights has registered the fourth application filed in the case of politically motivated charges against Mzia Amaglobeli.

According to the organization, the fourth application filed in the Strasbourg court concerns politically motivated criminal prosecution and conviction and is based on the argument that the right to a fair trial was violated in all three instances against Mzia Amaglobeli. GYLA disputes that the criminal prosecution did not serve the interests of justice and constituted political retaliation.

“Today marks exactly one year since the Batumi City Court convicted Mzia Amaglobeli. The decision of Judge Nino Nameshvili on August 6, 2025, confirmed that the national court had abandoned impartial justice and issued an unfounded, politically motivated verdict.

The fourth complaint filed with the Strasbourg Court concerns politically motivated criminal prosecution and conviction and is based on the argument that Mzia Amaglobeli’s right to a fair trial was violated in all three instances. GYLA disputes that the criminal prosecution did not serve the interests of justice and constituted political retaliation aimed at punishing an independent journalist and intimidating the public for expressing a different opinion.

Along with GYLA, Mzia Amaglobeli is represented in the Strasbourg Court by Edward Fitzgerald (one of the heads of Doughty Street Chambers, a leading British barrister specializing in criminal law, public and international human rights law).

The above-mentioned complaint was sent on June 26, 2026, and, as GYLA has recently learned, the Strasbourg Court has already registered the case within 1 week, on July 3, 2026.

GYLA has sent 3 more complaints of Mzia Amaglobeli to the Strasbourg Court: the first case (№13661/25) concerns the unlawful use of detention as a preventive measure, the second complaint (№36304/25) concerns administrative detention and related violations; and the third complaint (№10009/26) concerns ill-treatment and ineffective investigation of the case,” reads the information.
