18 years have passed since the Battle of Shindisi, one of the most difficult episodes of the August 2008 war. Today, traditionally, in Shindisi, representatives of the government and society, comrades-in-arms, relatives and family members of the deceased military personnel will gather and pay tribute to their memory.

On August 11, 2008, the 2nd Infantry Brigade of the Senaki Battalion of the Georgian Defense Forces, together with an engineering unit, was moving in a motorized convoy through the territory of the village of Shindisi, Gori Municipality, when, near the Shindisi railway station, the Georgian unit was ambushed by a Russian motorized rifle battalion. During the clash, mutual shooting took place within a radius of 70 meters.

According to available information, the besieged Georgian unit had little combat resources, but despite this, the unit inflicted great damage on the enemy.

On August 11, 2008, during an unequal clash with a Russian military unit, 17 Georgian soldiers of the 2nd Infantry Brigade of the Georgian Defense Forces died heroically - Aleksandre Oniani, Emzar Tsilosani, Vepkhvia Jishkariani, Zviad Katsadze, Teimuraz Beridze, Ilia Gabunia, Ilia Sheklashvili, Irakli Janelidze, Kakha Koshadze, Levan Melkadze, Marlen Baramia, Mikheil Dvalishvili, Nikoloz Porchkhidze, Roman Zoidze, Ruslan Tsuladze, Felix Kakauridze and Shmagi Kupatadze.
