No decision whatsoever has been taken at the Prosecutor’s Office in connection with whether a plea agreement will be concluded with Romeo Mikautadze, - this was stated to journalists by the lawyer of the former Deputy Minister of Economy, Romeo Mikautadze, Beka Nemsitsveridze.

According to him, “no informal negotiations whatsoever are under way” with the investigative agencies in connection with the conclusion of a plea agreement.

“At this stage there is no change whatsoever in connection with the plea agreement. We already wrote an application and applied in connection with the conclusion of a plea agreement while still at first instance. We have not received any answer - neither negative nor positive. As of today nothing has changed. We will have a process at the Court of Appeal on 14 September and let’s see if before then the Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia formulates any position and offers us any conditions, we will consider them.

We had a conversation with the prosecutor, however he also said that so far no decision whatsoever has been taken at the General Prosecutor’s Office in connection with whether a plea agreement will be concluded with Mr. Romeo,” Beka Nemsitsveridze stated.

For information, law-enforcement officers detained the former Deputy Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development on 20 June 2025.

The Prosecutor’s Office was accusing Romeo Mikautadze of the commission of several acts punishable under the Criminal Code. Specifically, one episode of legalisation of illegal income - “money laundering”; 3 episodes of abuse of official authority by a person holding a state-political office; 4 episodes of illegal participation in entrepreneurial activity; and 1 episode of exceeding official authority.

Romeo Mikautadze had been charged under Article 333 of the Criminal Code, which means exceeding official authority; for this he was sentenced to 3 years of deprivation of liberty.

He had also been charged under Article 332, Part 2 of the Criminal Code, which means abuse of official authority. For this he was sentenced to 3 years of deprivation of liberty.

Mikautadze had also been charged under Article 337 of the Criminal Code, which means the establishment by an official or a person equated to him, personally or through another person, of an enterprise, institution or organisation, participation in its management despite the prohibition, and the obtaining of illegal benefits and advantages by way of protection. For this he was sentenced to 3 years of deprivation of liberty.

Mikautadze had also been charged under Article 194, Part 3, sub-paragraph “g” of the Criminal Code, which means the illegal legalisation of illegal income - “money laundering,” accompanied by the receipt of a particularly large amount of income. For this he was sentenced to 10 years of deprivation of liberty.
