According to the former prosecutor of the case of the law enforcement officers accused of physical violence against the opposition politician Levan Khabeishvili, Lasha Gamkrelidze, Khabeishvili is not cooperating with the investigation.

With this, he answered the question whether the current and former high-ranking police officials, whom the politician accuses of participation in group violence and indifference, were questioned.

As the prosecutor explains, an investigator also visited Khabeishvili in prison, however, he did not testify.

"Levan Khabeishvili has been repeatedly offered to participate in procedural and investigative actions, however, for reasons unknown to us, he does not participate in procedural and investigative actions, therefore, it is unknown to me what he is stating in the media. I repeat once again, he is not cooperating with the investigation.

The investigator was present at the penitentiary institution, however, Levan Khabeishvili refused to provide information," Gamkrelidze said.

The prosecutor delivered an introductory speech at today's trial.

None of the defendants attended the trial.

The case concerns the accusations against the former head of one of the departments of the Special Operations Department of the State Security Service and an employee of the Special Tasks Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

For information, the Prosecutor's Office, within the framework of the 2024 protests, arrested five individuals, including three former and one active special forces officers, as well as one active employee of the Security Police Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, in connection with the violence committed against protester Zviad Maisashvili, politician Levan Khabeishvili, and journalist Guram Rogava.

Two special forces officers are already in custody as part of the ongoing investigation into various criminal cases.

All five detainees were charged under Article 333, Part 3, Subparagraph b of the Criminal Code of Georgia, which refers to abuse of official authority through violence, while the person detained in the Rogava episode was additionally charged under Article 154, Part 2, which refers to unlawfully obstructing a journalist in their professional activities through violence. The charges are punishable by imprisonment for a term of 5 to 8 years.

The cases of Guram Rogava and Zviad Maisashvili are being considered as separate episodes.
