Today, the wife of the accused Grigol Liluashvili was questioned, who spoke about general issues. Of course, she does not have any specific information regarding the criminal facts and no questions were asked in this direction, - said Mariam Berdzenishvili, the prosecutor in the case of the former head of the State Security Service, Grigol Liluashvili, who is accused of taking a particularly large bribe.

At today's trial, the defense witness - Grigol Liluashvili's wife, Maia Cheishvili, was questioned.

As Berdzenishvili explains, Cheishvili spoke about what real estate they owned, what they sold, what they bought later, etc.

“Today, the defendant’s wife was questioned, who spoke about general issues; of course, she has no information specifically related to the criminal facts and we did not ask any questions in this direction. She was asked general questions.

The defendant's wife spoke in general terms about what she knows about the real estate and movable property they owned since they got married, what they sold, what they bought later, etc. She spoke about these issues. Among them, the apartment they currently live in, with what funds it was purchased. The defendant's wife spoke about all this, simply stating that whatever property is registered in Grigol Liluashvili's name, or whatever property is related to him, is seized by the prosecution. Naturally, when we present our closing arguments, we will voice our position regarding these properties. It is noteworthy that Andria Liluashvili [Grigol Liluashvili's cousin] had a fairly large amount of property confiscated. I asked the defendant's wife if she had any information about Grigol Liluashvili and Andria Liluashvili having any common goals regarding any real estate or movable property, the witness stated that he does not possess such information. Therefore, I have no other substantive questions regarding her,” Berdzenishvili said.

According to her, Liluashvili himself must decide whether to plead guilty or not. As for whether, like other former high-ranking officials, he pleads guilty on the day of the verdict or before, expecting a plea agreement, whether he will also sign the said agreement, the prosecutor will give a general answer. As Berdzenishvili explains, the prosecutor’s office will consider all applications based on the appeal, confession, and cooperation.

“The accused himself, in this case, Grigol Liluashvili, must decide whether he wants to admit to the actions charged against him, which we dispute, or, as you [the journalist] say, if he has information about other crimes, he should speak about it. It is a very sad reality that a person in such a position today has the status of an accused, however, we all have a duty to protect the law, therefore, we must all accept the consequences that follow from violating the law,” Berdzenishvili said.

For information, Grigol Liluashvili, the former head of the State Security Service, who came to the prosecutor’s office for questioning, was arrested on December 23, 2025. He is charged under Article 338, Part 2, Subparagraph "c" and Part 3, Subparagraph "e" of the Criminal Code of Georgia, which involves taking a bribe in a particularly large amount by a group by prior agreement and provides for a sentence of 11 to 15 years of imprisonment.
