By decision of the Minister of Education, Science and Youth, Givi Mikanadze, changes have been introduced into the National Curriculum.

According to the document, during the semester a public school student will be assessed according to the following three components: a) ongoing homework; b) ongoing classroom assignment; c) summative assignment. The components will have equal weight.

In addition, according to the same document, if a student has an annual assessment lower than 5.0 in any subject in the class, the school is obliged to offer the student a remediation programme before the autumn examination is held.

“If a public school decides to use only the summative component for the purpose of assessing a student in any subject/subjects, the public school is obliged to submit appropriate justification for agreement to the relevant educational resource centre in whose operational territory this school is located. In the case of public schools existing on the territory of the Autonomous Republics of Abkhazia and Adjara, the justification is submitted, observing the same procedures, to the relevant ministry authorised in the field of education.

In the summative assignment component, the use of creative and context-based assignments is mandatory, which require the practical application of the knowledge acquired and the solving of complex problems (e.g., essay, project, research/field report, creative product, data analysis, etc.). To ensure the validity and objectivity of the summative assignment, the use of pre-developed assessment criteria (assessment rubric) is mandatory, which is provided to the student in advance for the purpose of transparency of the learning process.

If a public school student is unable to complete any summative assignment due to absence, the school is obliged to give him/her the opportunity to make up the missed summative assignments. The deadlines for making up summative assignments and the form of their conduct are determined by the school curriculum;

In grades I-IV and in the first semester of grade V, only formative assessment is used in all assessment components. In addition, the homework component at the primary level (grades I-VI) is assessed only with formative assessment.

In the case of learning difficulties caused by hospitalisation, the school is obliged to carry out the student’s teaching and assessment through a remediation programme and/or the possibility of home schooling,” the National Curriculum states.
