Zurab Japaridze: Giorgi Baramidze’s arrest on charges of high treason—carried out by a regime that apologizes to the occupier and has driven the country into isolation—is a classic example of brazen, Russian-style cynicism

Giorgi Baramidze’s arrest on charges of high treason—carried out by a regime that apologizes to the occupier, has driven the country into isolation, and left it without allies in the face of Russia—is a classic example of brazen, Russian-style cynicism," Zurab Japaridze, one of the leaders of the Coalition for Change, stated in response to the arrest of National Movement member Giorgi Baramidze.

As Japaridze writes on social media, Giorgi Baramidze has fought in every war this country has faced since the 1990s and is a remarkably courageous individual who deeply loves his country. The arrest of Giorgi Baramidze on charges of high treason—carried out by a regime that apologizes to the occupier; has isolated the country and left it without allies in the face of Russia; signed a cooperation agreement with Belarusian security services; granted carte blanche to Russian special services and pro-Russian groups within the country; destroyed the nation's defense and security; appointed Partskhaladze as Prosecutor General; and is praised and lauded to this day only by Moscow—is a display of sheer, brazen Russian-style cynicism.

Since the 1990s, Giorgi Baramidze has fought in every war this country has faced, and despite our differences of opinion on various issues, he is a remarkably courageous man who deeply loves this country. He needs no further encouragement, but he has my full support, as do all those currently held captive by the regime," Japaridze writes on social media.

For context, Giorgi Baramidze, a leader of the National Movement, was recently arrested at his home by representatives of the Prosecutor's Office. As Giorgi Baramidze stated at the time of his arrest, "he was told that he was being arrested for treason against Georgia."
