The Prosecutor General's Office of Georgia has arrested Giorgi Baramidze on charges of treason—specifically, sabotage—based on a court order. Deputy Prosecutor General Amiran Guluashvili announced at a briefing.

He added that the charge carries a penalty of up to four years in prison.

"As the public is aware, in July of this year, during Iago Khvichia’s program *The Birth of Georgia*, Giorgi Baramidze stated that during the initial stage of the 1992–1993 armed conflict in Abkhazia, representatives of the Georgian armed forces did not take prisoners but instead executed them on the spot; in doing so, he accused the Georgian armed forces of violating international humanitarian law and committing grave war crimes. An investigation conducted by the Prosecutor's Office of Georgia has conclusively ruled out any instances of prisoners being shot by representatives of the Georgian Armed Forces or other participants in the armed conflict—facts that were already known to the public and the international community and had never been a subject of dispute.

The information disseminated by Giorgi Baramidze is baseless and fabricated; it is deliberately ideological and propagandistic in nature, serving to undermine Georgia’s state and national interests, foreign security, defense capabilities, and state institutions.

Giorgi Baramidze’s statement has tarnished Georgia’s international image and created legal and political risks by fueling information campaigns and legal proceedings against Georgia in international forums. His statement has damaged the reputation of the Georgian Defense Forces and disparaged the honor and dignity of veterans of the War in Abkhazia and fallen military personnel. At the same time, Giorgi Baramidze’s actions jeopardized the process of reconciliation and confidence-building with the conflict-affected population, undermined Georgia’s peace and de-occupation policy, and hindered the normal functioning of state agencies—specifically the operations of the Office of the State Minister for Reconciliation and Civic Equality and the effective functioning of mechanisms established by that office for confidence-building and cooperation.

Based on evidence obtained during the investigation, Giorgi Baramidze is being charged with high treason—specifically, an act of sabotage—an offense punishable by up to four years in prison.

The Prosecutor's Office will petition the court within the statutory timeframe to remand the accused in custody as a preventive measure.
