A regular meeting of the interagency commission overseeing the construction and rehabilitation of schools was held, chaired by Georgian Minister of Education, Science and Youth Givi Mikanadze and Minister of Regional Development and Infrastructure Revaz Sokhadze.

The Ministry of Education said the commission members discussed schools whose building condition assessments were submitted by the Levan Samkharauli National Forensics Bureau in September this year. It was noted that the ministry would request additional assessments of the condition of each such school and make decisions based on the recommendations received.

Particular attention was paid to Tbilisi Public School No. 21 and the public school in Misaktsieli.

Regarding School No. 21, an additional assessment of the expert report found that specific rehabilitation works are required in the building. Once the several-week works are completed, students will be able to finish the 2026–2027 academic year in the same building. The condition of the building will continue to be monitored throughout the educational process.

The Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure and the Municipal Development Fund will begin the works in the coming days, under the supervision of experts, the ministry said.

As for the public school in Misaktsieli, the commission determined, based on the additional assessment of the building’s condition, that the educational process cannot continue in the existing building due to the extent of the damage. Accordingly, the Municipal Development Fund will begin construction of a new school in Misaktsieli.

“The additional assessment of the building’s condition showed that specific rehabilitation works must be carried out at School No. 21 in terms of ensuring safety, and these works will take several weeks. After that, students will return to the school, where the teaching and learning process will continue until the end of the current academic year, with continuous monitoring of the building’s condition. Starting in the summer, full-scale reconstruction works will be carried out at the school, during which the educational process will continue in an alternative building.

“As for the public school in Misaktsieli, due to the category of damage to the building, it is impossible to continue the educational process in the existing facility. The Ministry of Education has offered students the option of continuing their studies at an alternative school. At the same time, the Municipal Development Fund will construct a new school in Misaktsieli,” Givi Mikanadze said.

The meeting was attended by Mariam Lashkhi, Chair of the Georgian Parliament’s Education, Science and Youth Affairs Committee; Tbilisi Vice Mayor Giorgi Tkemaladze; Giorgi Murvanidze, Head of the Levan Samkharauli National Forensics Bureau; Giorgi Shonia, Executive Director of the Municipal Development Fund; and other representatives of the legislative and executive branches, the Levan Samkharauli National Forensics Bureau, and relevant agencies.
