“We achieved the result that should have been reached a little earlier. A working group will be established, and I believe a final decision should be made in the near future,” Gaioz Charkviani, the father of 20-year-old footballer Vakhtang Charkviani, who died of COVID-19, said after meeting with Prosecutor General Giorgi Gvarakidze.

According to him, he is suspending his protest outside the Prosecutor’s Office for now and will assist the working group in gathering relevant information.

“A working group will be established. A great deal of work has already been done on this case by my colleagues and me, as well as by the Prosecutor’s Office. I believe a decision should be made in the near future.

“If no new evidence is added to the case, this matter has already been thoroughly examined. We are professional lawyers and we know very well — in fact, we know precisely — what is contained where. Therefore, we will also assist the Prosecutor’s Office.

“We will provide the council members who will be part of the working group with the relevant information so that they can review the case anew. We will point out exactly what needs to be examined, so that they do not have to read all 20 volumes of the case file from the beginning.

“A person would have to be completely unreasonable to stop this process and continue the protest. A council has been established with a group of lawyers. So why should I continue sitting here and why should I go on hunger strike? Would I really help the defendants by damaging my own health?

“We achieved the result that should have been reached a little earlier. This meeting should have taken place sooner,” Charkviani said.

For reference, earlier in the day, Gaioz Charkviani, the father of the 20-year-old footballer who died of COVID-19, made a statement outside the Prosecutor’s Office, saying that he was seeking the restoration of justice.

The Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia later responded to Charkviani’s statement, explaining that “the investigation into the death of Vakhtang Charkviani began on October 8, 2021, based on a statement by Vakhtang Charkviani’s father, Gaioz Charkviani, and, within the ongoing criminal case, the Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia has brought criminal charges against three individuals.”

Twenty-year-old footballer Vakhtang Charkviani died at the Republican Hospital on September 10, 2021. He had COVID-19. The family holds medical personnel responsible for his death.
