“There were statements from Azerbaijan and Iran’s ambassador, and I am absolutely certain that Russia has a hand in it - such processes are developing with the assistance of the Russian special services,” Vladimir Chachibaia, a member of the Anti-Annexation Platform, said on PalitraNews’ program "Resume".

According to Chachibaia, it is in Russia’s interest to isolate Georgia not only from Europe and the United States, but also from China.

“Russia’s interest is to see Georgia isolated not only from Europe and the United States, but even from China. We have a strategic partnership [with China], but nothing is happening at the practical level, because it is not in Russia’s interest for Georgia to have a partnership with any side, whether it is the West, East, or South. Russia is interested only in having full control over the corridor connecting Asia with Europe, without taking into account the geopolitical interests of this country.

“We see the situation we have ended up in. We have been left without partners. There were statements from Azerbaijan and Iran’s ambassador, and I am absolutely certain that Russia has a hand in it. I cannot tell you exactly what conspiracy lies behind this, but it is my personal suspicion that such processes are developing with the assistance of the Russian special services,” Chachibaia said.

Chachibaia said he does not like the dynamics of relations between Russia and Georgia, in which there is what he considers excessive balancing and regulation.

“Europe and the United States were there when Georgia was facing its greatest economic and humanitarian difficulties, providing assistance.

I do not like the dynamic in which there is excessive balancing and regulation in relations with Russia. Of course, we should talk to Russia; this is necessary. Pragmatic cooperation with Russia on any issue is necessary. But Americans have a saying: when you negotiate, ‘you should win, and I should win too.’ From what I see, we do not see Georgia gaining from these relations.

At the beginning of the war, Georgia took important steps, including in relation to demands concerning sanctions. Georgia was affected by sanctions because of Russia, and instead of Russia taking positive steps, we are seeing steps toward annexation. The processes taking place in Abkhazia and Samachablo are a clear example of this.

Today, there was an inauguration in Samachablo, where a Russian citizen was elected president. This is another step and manifestation of annexation. His predecessor is an adviser to the Russian president and has openly stated that he will work to bring South Ossetia closer to Russia.

What we are seeing from Russia is not gratitude, but absolute disregard, and this is unfortunate. We have disrupted the balance that even [Eduard] Shevardnadze managed to maintain in conducting foreign policy.

I certainly do not mean to say that the Georgian Dream is trying to hand Georgia over to Russia. I am simply saying that as a result of this supposedly moderate policy, they will find themselves in a dead-end situation,” Chachibaia said.
