A prisoner was found dead at Rustavi No. 17 Penitentiary Institution - an investigation has been launched

A prisoner was found dead at Rustavi No. 17 Penitentiary Institution. TV Pirveli reports the information based on an account provided by a family member. According to the available information, the incident occurred on October 2.

The Penitentiary Service confirms the death of the prisoner and says that an investigation has been launched “following an immediate referral” by the Penitentiary Service.

According to the prisoner’s aunt, the family was informed on Friday that convict Iakob Guledani had been found dead in his cell. The aunt denies that the prisoner died by suicide.

“I am his aunt. The news broke on Friday that he had died. They say he killed himself. The boys there reportedly said he went into the toilet, and there was a ‘nylon cord’ on a nail, and he hanged himself. He had also had coffee that morning. Maybe he was poisoned... I don’t know what the experts determined and what they didn’t, but he would never have taken his own life. I think there are also signs of violence,” the deceased’s relative said.

According to her, the prisoner was due to be released from the penitentiary in a few months.

“He would not have killed himself. He had been in prison for three and a half years and hadn’t killed himself, and now, when he was supposed to be released in two or three months, he would do it? And this is only an assumption at this point. The prison staff said that he had coffee in the morning, then went into the toilet, and when he took too long and did not come out, they went to check on him. The door was locked, so they broke it down and found him hanging from a nail by this nylon cord,” the aunt told TV Pirveli.
