Mikheil Kavelashvili: The life of Erekle II reminds us that serving the country requires not only courage but also an understanding of the prevailing geopolitical realities—and the ability to uphold the supremacy of national interests even in the most difficult circumstances

King Erekle’s primary moral and political concern was the preservation of Georgian statehood, national identity, and his own people—Mikheil Kavelashvili writes on Facebook.
According to Mikheil Kavelashvili, King Erekle II is one of the most distinguished statesmen in Georgian history; his name is inextricably linked to the struggle for the country's freedom, the defense of state interests, and a profound sense of responsibility toward the homeland. In an extremely challenging geopolitical era—when Kartli-Kakheti faced existential threats, ceaseless aggression, demographic collapse, and the danger of the nation’s physical annihilation—King Erekle’s primary moral and political concern was the preservation of Georgian statehood, national identity, and his own people.
Efforts directed toward unifying the country, strengthening it politically and economically, and advancing education reflected King Erekle’s farsighted vision: that Georgia’s future should rest upon a strong state, an educated society, and national unity.
It is precisely for this reason that the legacy of Erekle II remains significant today; his life reminds us that serving one’s country requires not only courage but also an understanding of the surrounding geopolitical realities, a mindset rooted in statecraft, and a commitment to upholding national interests above all else, even in the most difficult circumstances.
I extend special congratulations on this day to Telavi and the entire Kakheti region. May the memory and state-building legacy of King Erekle II always be honored with dignity. It will have a place in our country's history," states Mikheil Kavelashvili.
