Latvian foreign minister: Situation in Georgia has not changed, Georgian people want to be part of Europe, but government has failed to take appropriate steps

“The situation on the ground has not changed. The Georgian people want to be part of Europe. Unfortunately, the government has not taken the appropriate steps,” Latvian Foreign Minister Baiba Braže told journalists in Luxembourg ahead of a meeting of EU foreign ministers.

“I cannot predict how the discussions will proceed, as we will hear presentations from both the European External Action Service and the European Commission. The situation on the ground has not changed. The people of Georgia want to be part of Europe. Unfortunately, the government has not taken the appropriate steps,” the Latvian foreign minister said.

Asked whether any form of dialogue was taking place with the Georgian side and the Georgian government, Braže replied: “We have an embassy, and we recently accredited a new ambassador in Riga, so dialogue exists.”

“Georgia is not excluded from international processes. However, as regards the steps that need to be taken on the path towards the European Union, which is what the Georgian people want, the people want something different from what the government wants,” Braže noted.
