David Matikashvili on EU financial assistance: Dividing the country into society and the government is counterproductive; who is this funding intended for if they are trampling on the choice of the Georgian people?!

“Dividing the country into society and the government is absolutely counterproductive to Georgia-EU relations. Who is this funding intended for if they are trampling on the choice of the Georgian people?” said David Matikashvili, Chair of the Parliamentary Procedural Issues and Rules Committee, in response to a question about the €38 million in assistance allocated by the European Union for the people of Georgia.

According to him, “Everything we are witnessing on the part of the Euro-bureaucracy is the result of malicious intent and immature politics.”

“Euro-bureaucrats do not recognise the choice of half of Georgia’s population. What conclusion are we supposed to draw from this? Who is this funding intended for if they are trampling on the choice of the Georgian people? This is yet another clear indication that the Euro-bureaucracy is completely disconnected from the existing political reality and continues stubbornly trying to use our country and our society for its own purposes. It genuinely does not care what our society thinks,” Matikashvili stated.

For context, the European Union has allocated €38 million in assistance to Georgia. The EU Delegation to Georgia explains that the funding will support projects designed to bring significant benefits to Georgian families and local communities.

“One of the key priorities of this package is supporting farmers, rural residents, and small and medium-sized businesses. Particular attention will be given to businesses and farms managed by women. We will also promote vocational skills development and create new opportunities in towns and small cities across the country. We are helping people who are returning to the country and wish to rebuild their lives here. In addition, we will provide substantial support to women and girls, creating new opportunities for them, including those who have experienced gender-based violence,” the EU Delegation explained.
