European Commission to present "2026 Enlargement Package" today, which includes a report on candidate countries, including Georgia

On November 4, the European Commission will present the "2026 Enlargement Package" in Brussels.

According to the Delegation of the European Union to Georgia, the package includes a communication on enlargement and reports detailing the progress made by candidate and potential candidate countries—Montenegro, Albania, Ukraine, the Republic of Moldova, Serbia, North Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Turkey, and Georgia—on their path toward the European Union.

The package assesses the progress made by each candidate country in implementing the reforms necessary for EU membership.

The EU Delegation states that a press conference will be held in Brussels in connection with this. Subsequently, EU Ambassador Paweł Herczyński will present the key findings of the report concerning Georgia in Tbilisi and answer questions from journalists.

“Every year, the European Commission assesses the progress of all candidate countries towards EU membership in a report – it includes Georgia, as Georgia is a candidate country. Yearly report. Clear criteria. Same standards for all.

In December 2023, the EU granted Georgia candidate status on the understanding that key reforms, known as ‘9 steps’ would follow. These 9 steps primarily focus on reforms in democracy, rule of law and human rights.

Candidate status is a milestone, and it comes with clear commitments. These commitments are linked to the ‘fundamentals’ of the EU accession process.

Democracy, rule of law and human rights are at the heart of EU membership. These ‘fundamentals’ apply to every candidate country. They are not optional.

No progress on the ‘fundamentals’, means de facto no progress towards EU membership: The EU is a union of values.

The report will be published on 4 November. EU Ambassador to Georgia, Paweł Herczyński will host a press conference after the publication – keep an eye out on our social media,” reads a statement posted on Facebook by the Delegation of the European Union to Georgia.
