4 sent to pre-trial detention, 7 granted bail for participating in match-fixing

Four persons were sent to pretrial detention and seven others – were granted GEL 10,000 bail for participating in match fixing in the minor and major leagues of Georgia.

The detainees, who were arrested on May 20 and were officially charged yesterday, are former and current footballers.

Four of the detainees, including Vakhtabg Jakeli, Lasha Chapidze and Nika Daushvili and Irakli Khuchua, who is the footballer of FC “Chiatura”, have been sent to pre-trial detention, while Irakli Bajelidze, Robert Imerlishvili, Joni Sherozhia, Giorgi Bediashvili, Paata Ghudushauri, Nikoloz Maisuradze and Nodar Kiknavelidze have been granted GEL 10,000 bail.

All the seven detainees will be released after posting the bail.

The Anti-Corruption Agency of the State Security Service of Georgia has arrested eight current and three former footballers of three football teams for bribery and fixing matches in both minor and major leagues of Georgia. Police say the organised group contacted footballers and concluded agreements with them to lose games.

The organized group and footballers received GEL 93,500 in total.

The detainees face from four to six years of imprisonment.
