Ana Dolidze: The move of the Public Defender is late

The move is good today, but it is already late, because it will not affect the 20-member list, - said Ana Dolidze, a non-judge member of the High Council of Justice in response to the decision of the Public Defender to file a constitutional lawsuit with the Constitutional Court.

“I had been raising the issue almost every week since spring, when Irakli Kobakhidze was drafting the law, and I had been saying that the rule was wrong, that the recommendations of the Venice Commission were not taken into account. Unfortunately, we could not hear the support of the Public Defender then. It's a good move today, but it's late, because it won't affect the 20-member list. It may have some impact in the future, but it won't affect today's unfortunate outcome. If we had heard the Public Defender’s voice when this fight was in zenith, even if she had made a strict public statement, it would have been very important indeed. But, unfortunately, Nazi Janezashvili and I were alone in this fight. In the future, of course, the position of the Public Defender is important, but it is important when it can impact things and not when the most important stage is over,” said Ana Dolidze.

She also added that in August she called on the Public Defender to get involved in the process and make a statement about discrimination.
