During the course of a week from 15th July to 22nd July, 2021, assessments of landslide hazard zones within ten municipalities of Georgia (Keda, Zugdidi, Khoni, Tsageri, Oni, Mtskheta, Tbilisi, Gori, Sagarejo and Tetritskaro) pre-selected by the National Environment Agency were conducted, with the support of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) and experts of the international company "Baugeologisches Büro Bauer GmbH" - Dr. Peter Neumann and Mr. Klaus Keilig. Assessment of tensed zones with geological hazards and selection of necessary tools is envisioned by the Project, allowing the National Environment Agency to conduct more comprehensive monitoring of ten landslide sites. The implementation of the project will ensure the introduction of one of the first modern instrumental monitoring systems in Georgia.
‘Current project will allow us to select the optimal equipment for ten landslide bodies in different municipalities throughout Georgia, taking into consideration their type, mechanism of slide and other specifics that will facilitate the carrying out of constant monitoring on the mentioned landslide hazard zones. Aforementioned will enable us to be more prepared to meet the imminent dangers from the landslide zones and to evade significant damage’ – says the Deputy Head of Geology Department of the National Environment Agency Otar Kurtsikidze.
The project is implemented with the support of GIZ, on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), within the framework of the Good Governance for Local Development, South Caucasus (GGLD) Programme. Since 1992, with the funding of BMZ, GIZ has been actively assisting Georgia in the areas of good governance and democracy, sustainable economic development as well as environment and climate change, among other areas. GGLD aims to foster citizen oriented local self-governance and regional development reforms in Georgia.
