Alexander Grushko: NATO enlargement involves unacceptable risks that Moscow will stand up against

The enlargement of the North Atlantic Alliance involves unacceptable risks that Moscow will stand up against. The statement came from Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko at a briefing after the NATO-Russia Council meeting.

"The second factor that has a serious impact on Europe's security is the enlargement of the Alliance. I remind you that in 1997 there was only one country knocking on NATO door, which has one common border with Russia, and that was Poland. Today, many states have joined NATO, and their territories are clearly being used to project force against Russia from a variety of geographical directions and strategic depths. This seriously deteriorates our security and creates unacceptable risks for us, that we will stand up against," said the Russian diplomat.

Grushko noted that the meeting of the NATO-Russia Council was dedicated to the analysis of all the factors that affect the degradation of European security, which has been observed in recent years.

He also noted that the meeting revealed a large number of discrepancies in fundamental issues.

He said that if NATO chooses the policy of containment, Russia will use a counter-containment policy. According to Grushko, Russia's proposals to NATO are complex in nature and all elements are interrelated. He also said that NATO should provide Russia with legal guarantees on its eastward non-expansion.
