Grigol Vashadze: I have never said that the Government is pro-Russian, it tries to sit on 3-4 chairs at the same time - the allies won't forgive Georgia for deviating from the sanctions regime

I have never said that this Government is pro-Russian - it constantly tries to sit on 3-4 benches at the same time, said Grigol Vashadze, an opposition lawmaker, told PalitraNews TV.

According to him, the Georgian Government is not pro-Russian, but at the same time, does not aspire to European integration.

According to the oppositionist, "sitting on 3-4 chairs at the same time will not work."

"I have never said that this Government is pro-Russian. This Government constantly tries to sit on 3-4 chairs at a time. Pro-Russian means that you follow the instructions and if you look at the practical steps, it turns out that none of the Kremlin demands to Georgia were met. Another thing is that it's not European either, because when you leave the Charles Michel agreement, because someone did not sign it, when you refuse to carry out these reforms, it's a complete disaster. By the way, what I'm telling you now is the assessment that our allies have.

The position of the Government is: do not irritate Russia, try to be as restrained as possible with Russia - at the same time, let us continue what is related to the European Union, NATO. Under no circumstances should we open the Abkhazian section of the Georgian Railway to Russia, under no circumstances should we slow down our movement westwards - but moving westwards, without what the allies ask you and tell you that these are not specific demands on you, these are the demands with which all Eastern and Central European countries have joined the European Union ... so it will not really work to sit on 3-4 chairs at once," Vashadze said.

According to him, the statements made by the Prime Minister of Georgia, Irakli Gharibashvili, regarding the imposition of sanctions against Russia were very bad, unnecessary, untimely and meaningless.

According to Vashadze, our allies pay serious attention to the sanctions regime and won't forgive Georgia for deviating from this regime.

"Very bad statements were made by the Prime Minister of Georgia. Unnecessary, untimely, meaningless. Especially since the US Ambassador, Kelly Degnan, gave a wonderful wording to the Government, which said that the allies are in constant contact with Georgia so that Georgia is fully embedded in sanctions. It was simply necessary to repeat it. It was a very rude, untimely and pointless statement, and most importantly, we must remember that our allies are paying serious attention to the sanctions regime. Moreover, they won't forgive Georgia for deviating from it," he said.

Vashadze also called the statements made by members of the ruling team to the Ukrainian authorities absurd.

"What is visible on the surface for all Georgian citizens is that extremely absurd statements are being made. Among them, almost declaring President Zelensky's administration as "Nationals" [opposition]. That the position of Ukraine towards Georgia is supposedly conditioned by the former high-ranking officials who are there. All responsible persons, officials, politicians, should refrain from such statements, especially in such a hot phase," Vashadze said.
