5 persons, arrested in Batumi yesterday, released from courtroom

The trial of Giorgi Kirtadze, Levan Antadze, Gia Abuladze, Merab Varshalomidze and Ilia Jincharadze, members of the United National Movement, who were detained near the Government House of Adjara yesterday, was held at the Batumi City Court.

The defence requested the presentation of evidence by the law enforcers and interrogation of high-ranking police officials: Irakli Basiladze, Davit Maghradze and Grigol Beselia. According to them, the mentioned high-ranking officials were directly involved in the arrest.

"The police have not presented the evidence, we are waiting. We also need time to prepare materials. We request the interrogation of high-ranking police officials - Grigol Beselia and Irakli Basiladze,” the lawyers said.

The detainees were released from the courtroom. The next trial will be held on May 23, at 12:00.

Leaders of the United National Movement and their supporters held a rally in front of the Government House of Adjara yesterday demanding that Mikheil Saakashvili be taken abroad for medical treatment. They set up tents in protest, but later law enforcement officers removed the tents, which led to clashes. Law enforcement officers arrested 25 people.
