Salome Zurabishvili: We have more than a million people abroad and only a few thousand of them participate in the elections, it is time start using electronic means to allow them to participate in elections

President Salome Zurabishvili believes that Georgian citizens living abroad should be allowed to vote electronically.

Zurabishvili made the relevant statement in her speech delivered at the forum "Georgian Diaspora for the European Future of Georgia".

As the President noted, millions of Georgians are abroad, however, only thousands of them are able to participate in the elections, which, in her estimation, is a problem.

"We have more than a million people abroad and only a few thousand people participate in the elections. How long may this last? Today, there are electronic means that can allow people participate in elections, we have tried this in the last elections and perhaps it is time start using these means to allow Georgians living abroad to participate in elections. It is not necessary to open a lot of election commissions. This would probably lower the polarization as well. There is still a lot we can do to make the diaspora more involved [in the life of the country]," Zurabishvili said.
