According to Lelo, the debates on Georgia in the European Parliament confirmed that Bidzina Ivanishvili and the Georgian Dream are the main obstacles to Georgia's European future.
According to the party, the debate has made it clear that Georgia and the Georgian people have a lot of supporters in all political groups in the European Parliament.
"On the road to Europe, our partners have cited oligarchic rule, the persecution of journalists, the fight against freedom of speech, the reversal of democracy and the failure of reforms as the main obstacles. The debate made it clear that Georgia and the Georgian people have a lot of supporters in all political groups in the European Parliament. Today, we have repeatedly heard from the highest political tribune of Europe - "give Georgia the status of a candidate" - this absolute support of European politicians belongs only to the Georgian people. However, the Georgian Dream's destructive policies made it impossible to avoid harsh criticism, including from members of the Socialist and Democrat political group. After the debate, it was reaffirmed that Lelo's offer for the Georgian Dream to return to the Michel's April 19 agreement immediately and for the Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili to use her constitutional leverage to secure the country's European future - including pardoning Nika Gvaramia who was sentenced on the basis of political motivation - all this is a necessary positive message to European partners and the only reasonable way to save the historical choice of the Georgian people and the historical perspective of our country," Lelo said in a statement.
The European Parliament debated a resolution on media rights in Georgia yesterday, and will vote today. The MEPs spoke about the political situation inside Georgia, as well as issues related to the judiciary and media freedom.
