Salome Samadashvili: If the EU decides to grant Moldova and Ukraine candidate status and Georgia is not granted candidate status, we must understand that this will deprive us of the opportunity to become a member of the EU for a long time

"If the EU decides to grant Moldova and Ukraine candidate status and Georgia is not granted candidate status, we must understand that this will deprive us of the opportunity to become a member of the EU for a long time," Salome Samadashvili, a member of Lelo, told reporters.

According to her, if the geopolitical arguments do not outweigh and the European Union does not give us the status of a candidate country, the Georgian Dream will bear full political responsibility.

"We must understand that the Georgian Dream is shamefully lying to our society. For example, open propaganda started yesterday, including on Imedi, with its survey, as if someone was asking the Georgian Government to get involved in the war. We must understand that Moldova's position on the Russia-Ukraine war is very cautious, due to their own security challenges. However, we see today that open statements are made that Moldova may have a much better chance than Georgia to get candidate status, why? Because the Moldovan Government openly says that they do their best to meet all the criteria related to EU membership as soon as possible. What the Georgian Dream has done in recent weeks deliberately prevents the granting of candidate status to our country. If the geopolitical arguments do not outweigh and the European Union does not give us the status of a candidate country, the Georgian Dream will bear full political responsibility. This contradicts our Constitution, which clearly states that our country's foreign policy goal is to join the European Union and NATO," Salome Samadashvili said.

As Samadashvili noted, in order for a country to join the European Union, it must have a government that has the relevant task.

“There is no longer any trust in the Georgian Dream, which violated the Michel agreement and had repeatedly deceived its Western partners before that too.

When a country has a Prime Minister who has not been able to determine the status of a candidate country, whether it is a symbolic or real achievement, such a country, unfortunately, should not have great expectations for great success under this government," Samadashvili said.
