Sozar Subari: If we are not granted the status, the Georgian people may really ask a question - what should we do, should we join the CIS in order to get EU candidate status as they promise to Moldova?

“If such a decision is made, it will be not only incomprehensible, but also unfair - then the Georgian people may really ask a question - what should we do, should we join the CIS in order to get EU candidate status as they promise to Moldova or to declare neutral status like Moldova?” Georgian Dream MP Sozar Subari said in response to a question relating to the reports that only Ukraine and Moldova may be granted EU candidate status, while Georgia may not.

As Subari noted, the Georgian Government is doing everything possible for the country to gain candidate status for EU membership and deserves it by objective criteria. According to Subari, Georgia is much ahead of Ukraine and Moldova.

"The task of our country is to join the European Union. This is clearly written in the Constitution of Georgia and the only party that voted for the above is the Georgian Dream. The Georgian Government stated that we would apply for a candidate status in 2024, but the ongoing war in Ukraine accelerated the process and we applied together with Ukraine and Moldova. If we are talking about Ukraine making great sacrifices for EU membership and the protection of European values, yes, I agree, this is truth and a sad reality. However, this price was paid by Georgia as well and we still pay it today - the occupied territories of Georgia, three wars, many of our killed civilians, soldiers, ruined cities and villages. If we are talking about the fact that EU membership requires certain reforms and meeting the criteria, then we can boldly say that Georgia is far ahead of Ukraine and Moldova in terms of these criteria. If we are talking about the fact that obtaining EU membership status can stop the war, of course, I would support Ukraine to receive the status in the first place, although I do not think that obtaining candidate status is a precondition for stopping the war. And if there is no precondition for this, it would not be right to leave Georgia out. I expect from our friends - Ukrainians and Moldovans – that they will say that all three of us should get the status together, as we say it," said Sozar Subari.

Levan Dolidze - Instead of focusing on the steps that should bring us further progress, we are creating new barriers on the path to the EU
