It was a very important and timely address, because there has recently been a direct attack on Georgia as a state by using the term de-oligarchization, the Speaker of the Parliament of Georgia, Shalva Papuashvili, said when responding to today's statement of Irakli Gharibashvili, which the Prime Minister published on the social network.
According to Papuashvili, the recommendation relating to de-oligarchization made by the European Commission first of all implies "strengthening of institutions".
"A few days ago, we heard an explanation, including from the EU Ambassador in Georgia, that the term deoligarchization generally means control and reduction of the influence of people with certain abilities to influence the economy, politics and other spheres of public life. This does not mean strengthening of individuals, but primarily institutions. The mentioned issue was included in the priorities of all three countries [Georgia, Ukraine, Moldova] and it is not specifically about any country or person. Nevertheless, yesterday I heard the statement of one of the Members of European Parliament and Bidzina Ivanishvili was again directly targeted.
There is a distortion of the idea which the European Union put in the text and it is being used for internal political purposes. The second emphasis, which was also important in the Prime Minister's address, is that when talking about oligarchization, it has a second, more serious aspect - in fact, whoever says that Bidzina Ivanishvili is an oligarch, he says that the Government of Georgia is actually run by another person. This is a direct insult to Georgian democracy. The Government elected by the people of Georgia governs this country, and to say that in fact the Prime Minister, the Speaker of the Parliament or Members of Parliament do not make decisions and that these decisions are made elsewhere, is an insult to Georgian democracy. This needs a response, because you cannot insult people's choices so blatantly," said Papuashvili.
As for the question whether the founder of the Georgian Dream party and former Prime Minister, Bidzina Ivanishvili intends to return to Georgian politics, Shalva Papuashvili answered that he had left politics and was not involved in the decision-making process.
