Mamuka Mdinaradze on Kelly Degnan: We would like to call on her to be clear in her statements on deoligarchization - if there is not much clarification, many people will get the impression that the message box of the opposition matches the Ambassador's enthusiasm

We would like to call on the representative of our strategic partner-friendly country to be clear in her statements, for example, regarding the issue of deoligarchization - if there is not much clarification, many people in this country and even outside the country will have the impression that the message box of the opposition matches the enthusiasm of the Ambassador of our partner country, Georgian Dream faction chairman Mamuka Mdinaradze said.

According to Mdinaradze, if the statement that the law of deoligarchization should be adapted to the Georgian reality and specifics, at the same time, means that it should be adapted to a specific person, i.e. Bidzina Ivanishvili, it indicates that we put the principles of law aside.

"Yesterday Khatia Dekanoidze came out and said that the law should be adapted to Bidzina Ivanishvili, today Kelly Degnan came out and said that this law should be drawn up with Georgian specifics. If there is not more clarity here and if there is not more clarification, many people in this country and even outside the country will have the impression that the message box of the opposition matches with the enthusiasm of the representative of our partner and friend country, the Ambassador. If adapting it to Georgian reality and specifics, at the same time, means adapting it to a specific person whom they want it to adapt, i.e. Bidzina Ivanishvili, it means that we put the principles of law and the principles of democracy aside and apply a law directly to a specific person like in some authoritarian countries. This is against the principles of the law, and therefore more clarification and precision is needed, what is meant behind this statement," Mdinaradze said.

In addition, he asked the journalists if they could name one specific theoretical circumstance, as to what regional specifics deoligarization could have which could be different in Ukraine and different in Georgia. "The only thing is that one specific criterion for owning money can be recorded in the evaluation criteria, whether a person is an oligarchy or not," said Mdinaradze.

For information, today the US Ambassador commented on the deoligarchization law in Georgia.

"It’s an issue that many countries grapple with, including my own. There are different ways that countries address undue influence in the political sector, and I think each country needs to debate that and come up with its own solution. I personally don’t think it’s always helpful to just borrow somebody else’s without tailoring it to the specifics of your country’s situation. There are many good examples out there that can be examined and crafted into something that is appropriate for Georgia, and the underlying problem, which is undue influence that affects the political will of the people," Degnan said.
