Irakli Kobakhidze: I remember only two attacks on the US Ambassador in Georgia - one by Nika Gvaramia and the other by Nikanor Melia

According to Irakli Kobakhidze, chairman of the Georgian Dream, he remembers only two attacks on the US Ambassador in Georgia - one by Nika Gvaramia, the founder of the Mtavari TV and the other by the leader of the National Movement Nikanor Melia.

Kobakhidze evaluated the statement of US Under Secretary for Arms Control and International Security Bonnie Jenkins, and said that there had not been an attack on the US ambassador by the ruling team.

"As far as I know, the term “attack” was used. I don't remember any attacks on the US Ambassador, except two, there were two exceptions, one by Nika Gvaramia and the other by Nikanor Melia. They had such statements, expressions, including insulting expressions. I just don't remember another attack. Therefore, I don't know who she meant. You have to ask her," said Kobakhidze.

According to him, if he saw an attack on the Ambassador, he would have distanced himself from such statements.

"Let us remind you that they started everything by asking questions. Then the questions were not answered and this was followed by their interpretation. This is certainly not an attack. Georgia is proud that after 2012, we have had freedom of expression. Freedom of expression is relevant not only within the country, but also in international relations. Naturally, no one can restrict anyone's freedom of expression," said Kobakhidze.

According to him, everything would have become clear if the questions had been answered.

"Let me remind you of these questions - do the NGOs demanding the resignation of the Government receive funding from specific sources? This was followed by silence and interpretation," said Kobakhidze.

According to him, there is a lot of information that may be of interest to the public, but "the Government is not going to talk about it because it is wary of certain relationships, situations and interests that not only Georgia, but also its partners may have".

"We are careful about this and therefore we do not release certain information," said Kobakhidze.

US Under Secretary for Arms Control and International Security Bonnie D. Jenkins, who is paying a visit to Georgia, said that they’ve been dismayed to see personal attacks on Ambassador Degnan and the Embassy.
