Irakli Kobakhidze: If the radical opposition's calculation is that the Parliament will not be able to elect a Public Defender, but they will leave Giorgi Burjanadze as the de facto Ombudsman with such tricks, this will be a drastic occurrence

If the radical opposition's calculation is that the Parliament will not be able to elect a Public Defender, but they will leave Giorgi Burjanadze as the de facto Ombudsman with such tricks, this will be a drastic occurrence and the society should evaluate it, the chairman of Georgian Dream Irakli Kobakhidze stated.

According to him, the issue of electing the Public Defender is actually in the hands of the opposition, since Georgian Dream does not have 90 votes in the Parliament.

"Nino Lomjaria was involved in political processes in such a way that I don't rule it out that she may take such a political step of being replaced by her first deputy, in order to leave another politician - Giorgi Burjanadze, as the duty holder. Of course, this will be absolutely unacceptable, and society will evaluate this step as well.

We will not be able to elect anyone if there is no support from the opposition, because 90 votes are needed to elect a Public Defender," Kobakhidze said.

As for the decision of the Citizens to present all 19 candidates to the Parliament for the position of Public Defender, as Kobakhidze notes, in this case, the Parliament will have to conduct interviews with all 19 candidates, which "means more load" for the Parliament.

"Instead of, let's say, 7-8-9 candidates, we will listen to 19 candidates. Technically, this means more load for the Parliament, but it may not be bad for transparency. Let's see," said Kobakhidze.

According to him, Georgian Dream has certain attitudes towards specific candidates, however, representatives of the ruling team "do not get ahead of events".

"I will not get ahead of events. We have our attitudes towards specific candidates, but we will not get ahead of the events. Let's follow the procedure. The procedure includes an interview with all candidates and after this interview we will finally inform the public of our position. Until then, we will avoid taking a position," Kobakhidze said.
