Salome Zurabishvili: Today it is a strategically urgent moment for Georgia to get "yes" regarding the candidate status

Work is underway in the Parliament of Georgia, there is progress, but the 12 recommendations are not yet fully implemented. I believe that today it is a strategically urgent moment for Georgia to get "yes". We know very well that obtaining the candidate status does not mean the end of this road, President of Georgia Salome Zurabishvili said in an interview with the French media agency France Info.

According to the President, Georgia needs security guarantees from the international community.

"Yes, that's my message today! As you know, Georgia failed to receive the status of a candidate country, along with Ukraine and Moldova. There were reasons for this, the reforms had been delayed. Before that, I would say that Georgia's aspiration towards Europe was flawless. We have deadlines, but today this issue has become strategic; Now that Ukraine is winning, the international solidarity is unchanged, it is very important that Russia does not get the impression that there is a gray area about which the international community, Europe, the United States of America, are less determined, where it could easily compensate for the pride that has been damaged in Ukraine. Georgia is much smaller than Ukraine, has less military, human resources and depth of territory, and this is strategically very important, strategically...," she said.

According to her, there is a familiar situation in Ukraine now, except that this time "the international community is waking up".

"Not only 15 years ago, there have been regular Russian attacks on Georgia. There was a war in 2008, since then the territories were occupied, 20 percent of the territories of Georgia are occupied, which means the existence of military bases, Russian bases on [Georgia's] territory, some of them about 30 kilometers from the capital, very close," said the President.
