Shalva Papuashvili: It is important to reach an agreement on the candidate of the ombudsman as soon as possible and the main condition is that he/she should be acceptable to the coalition majority

It is important to reach an agreement on the candidate of the ombudsman as soon as possible, and the main condition is that he/she should be equally acceptable to the coalition majority and, of course, to Georgian Dream as the party with the majority in this Parliament, said Shalva Papuashvili, Chairman of the Parliament of Georgia.

According to him, part of the opposition tried to discredit the process and they need to understand that consent is important in the process.

"In general, we saw that there was an attempt by the opposition to discredit the process from the very beginning. For this very purpose, they named the final candidates at the very beginning of the process without even thinking about alternatives. We, on the contrary, showed openness from the beginning, we showed that it should be a transparent process, the outcome of which should not be known at the outset.

We think that it is important to agree on a candidate as soon as possible, and the main condition is that he/she should be equally acceptable to the coalition majority and, of course, first of all, he/she should be acceptable to Georgian Dream as the party with the majority in this Parliament. Otherwise, it is impossible to talk about decisions that will not be approved by the majority of the population of Georgia. Therefore, I think it is important for our colleagues to understand, agreement is important, and the voice of the majority of the population of Georgia, represented by the Georgian Dream, is particularly decisive in this respect," Papuashvili said.
