We call on the Georgian authorities that this is their responsibility to respect all the rights of all prisoners, including the rights of the former president, Pawel Herczynski, said after the meeting with the chairmen of the committees in the legislative body.
“On the question of former President Mikheil Saakashvili, what I want to say is that we are very concerned about the reports of his deteriorating health. We are monitoring the ongoing judicial procedures very closely. We sincerely hope that this judicial process will end up rather quickly. And in the meantime, we call on the Georgian authorities that this is their responsibility to respect all the rights of all prisoners, including the rights of the former president”, said the Ambassador.
As he noted, he and the representatives of the Georgian Government have very open and honest conversations.
“We have very open and very honest conversations and we are listening to the point of view of the Georgian Government and also different opinions in the Parliament. We are expressing our views and our sensitivities, also sensitivities of our member states. What is very important is that we are more and more on the same page on all the issues so that we avoid any unpleasant surprises at the end of the year. And I hope this is the direction that we are going to. In case you ask me about political prisoners, our view is that this is a responsibility of the Georgian authorities to make sure that all the rights of all the prisoners in Georgia are respected”, said the Ambassador.
