Today, an important decision was announced by the Strasbourg Court, establishing that Russia had been exercising effective control over the territory of Abkhazia even before 2008, - said Speaker of the Parliament of Georgia Shalva Papuashvili.

As Papuashvili noted, it has been confirmed by the Strasbourg court that from 1990 - 1993 the territory of Abkhazia has already been legally recognized as the territory occupied by Russia.

"You know that in January 2021, a decision was made by the Strasbourg court, which established that after 2008, Russia has had effective control over Abkhazia and also over Samachablo, which in legal language means occupation. This decision stated that even before 2008, Russia had been exercising effective control. As of today, we can say that the Strasbourg Court has confirmed with a court document that from 1990 - 1993, the territory of Abkhazia has been legally recognized as the territory occupied by Russia. Of course, this is the result of the fact that our government has been active in terms of international mechanisms for the last 10 years,'' Shalva Papuashvili said.
