Girchi MP criticizes Presidential Veto powers in election legislation

Iago Khvichia, a member of the "Girchi" party, voiced concerns regarding the handling of election legislation in Georgia, particularly the broad veto powers granted to the President by the ruling "Georgian Dream" party.

Khvichia asserted that the topic of the Central Election Commission (CEC) falls squarely within the purview of the President Salome Zurabishvili, who has been granted extensive veto authority by "Georgian Dream." He raised questions about the lack of transparency surrounding the President's exercise of these powers, noting the absence of clarity regarding the number of vetoes issued and rescinded.

"It is troubling that the President wields unchecked veto powers over election legislation, with little accountability or transparency. The opacity surrounding the use of these vetoes undermines public trust in the electoral process," Khvichia remarked.

He criticized what he perceived as the President's purported impartiality and oppositional stance, suggesting that the current system fails to effect meaningful change for the Georgian populace.

"Despite the President's ostensible role as a symbol of impartiality and opposition, the reality remains unchanged for the Georgian people. The persistence of Giorgi Kalandarishvili as CEC chairman amidst the political maneuvering underscores the futility of these efforts," Khvichia concluded.
