Rati Bregadze: Judges should be selected in Georgia

Judges should be selected in Georgia, - the Minister of Justice, Rati Bregadze, told journalists about the vetting system.

As Rati Bregadze pointed out, it is unacceptable to make decisions on the appointment of judges outside the country.

"The presented system, which certain forces want, is that the decision on the appointment of judges in Georgia should be practically made outside the country, which, of course, is unacceptable to us. This has been said many times, and I fully support the course of the parliamentary majority, that judges should be selected in Georgia. I am sure that you also want this to be a matter of national sovereignty", said Bregadze.

According to the Minister of Justice, the vetting system is not a necessary requirement from the partners.

"There is no requirement that we cannot enter the European Union if the judges are not selected by representatives of any other country. This is not true. In EU countries, the decision regarding the selection of a judge is made by the relevant state bodies. This is an opinion that we do not share, and there is nothing unnatural here," said Bregadze.
