Irakli Kobakhidze: NGOs are afraid of funding transparency - there is no alternative to adopting the law

Actually, you can all see that the opposition does not have many resources, Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze told journalists. As he noted, the Georgian society supports the transparency of NGOs.

"Transparency of non-governmental organizations is the most important thing for the public to be informed. An informed society is a necessary condition for the country's sovereignty to be firmly protected. This is very well understood by society. The public wants more information regarding the financing of NGOs, including in order to prevent the events that occurred in 2020, 2021-2022. Accordingly, there is no alternative to the adoption of this law, moreover, during all this time, no one could present any argument against this law," said Kobakhidze.

As for the statements of the European partners, according to Irakli Kobakhidze, non-governmental organizations are afraid of the transparency of funding.

"When it comes to the statements of European institutions, we are often asked why you couldn't convince them?! We remind you that before we failed to convince them that they should not make these statements, we failed to convince them that they should make their finances transparent for 1 year. They don't want to, they are afraid of funding transparency. This is actually the main reason why the statements that are unfortunately made are made. How can you have any argument that an NGO should submit an annual declaration once a year. This is only a positive event", said Kobakhidze.

According to the Prime Minister, when statements are made in such conditions, it means that someone does not want transparency very much.

"We do not want the processes in the country to develop in the way that developed in 2001-2022. Do you remember, back then, the 2 former ambassadors were at the head of very difficult processes, NGOs were twice placed at the epicenter of revolutionary processes, there were other processes. There are a thousand types of vicious propaganda that NGOs are involved in, including the drug propaganda that specific organizations are directly involved in. The society should have information on this, who is financing such wrong actions", said Kobakhidze.
