Peter Stano: The decision on sanctions is to be made not by Josep Borrell, but by member states

Sanctions are not a decision to be made by the High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice-President of the European Commission, the decision on sanctions is taken by the member states when they reach a consensus that nothing else will bring the desired result, - the Spokesperson of the European Union External Action Service, Peter Stano, said at the briefing, thereby responding to recent events in Georgia.

Stano answered a question regarding the letter sent by MEPs to Josep Borrell, where they ask the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy to prepare sanctions against people are steering Georgia away from its European future.

According to him, the case has not yet reached sanctions.

"We are not there yet, after all, Georgia is a candidate country, and we still hope, expect and call on the authorities to return to the European path and fulfill all the obligations they voluntarily took when they requested the candidate status of their country," said Peter Stano.
