The third president of Georgia and the founder of the main opposition party, "United National Movement", Mikheil Saakashvili, is in prison on political grounds, on politically motivated charges. Ivanishvili uses corrupt judges as a tool of political persecution. There is no place for political justice in a democratic country, Tina Bokuchava, the chairperson of the "United National Movement", said during her speech at the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly.
According to her assessment, ex-president Mikheil Saakashvili is being mistreated and is deprived of appropriate medical care.
"I must emphasize that other political prisoners remain in illegal detention in Russia, Belarus and also in Georgia, where the authoritarian government under the leadership of Russian billionaire Bidzina Ivanishvili uses corrupt judges as a tool of political persecution.
Mikheil Saakashvili, the third president of Georgia and the founder of the main opposition party, "United National Movement", whose chairman I am now, is in prison on political grounds, on politically motivated charges. He is mistreated and deprived of proper medical care. According to the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture, he is in "an environment that is repressive, humiliating and unfavorable for improving his health".
There is no place for political justice in a democratic country. Suppressing or neutralizing critical voices is how authoritarians grow stronger and try to maintain power against the will of the people. The government of Georgia is following this path of oppression and is trying to divert Georgia from the Euro-Atlantic path. However, this dangerous change can be changed by the October key elections, and I call on the members of the committee and the Assembly in general to show full support to the freedom-loving people of Georgia and to actively participate in the election observation mission, which will decide the Euro-Atlantic integration of Georgia," said Tina Bokuchava.
