Irakli Kobakhidze: The draft law has not been initiated, yet some are talking about media restrictions. If there is a problem, why should the country not be cured of this serious affliction?

The draft law has not been initiated, yet some are talking about restrictions on media freedom. It turns out that media freedom in the UK has been violated, which is ridiculous. If there is a problem, why should the country not be cured of this serious affliction? – This is what the Prime Minister of Georgia, Irakli Kobakhidze, said regarding the announced changes to the "Media Law."

According to him, changes regarding the media are not just necessary, but essential.

"Everyone recognizes the problem, and it is mentioned in the conclusions of OSCE/ODIHR. The problem is that the media in Georgia has been established as a major source of polarization, incitement of hatred, and the spreading of lies. This problem is evident, isn't it? All of this characterizes the Georgian media landscape. If there is a problem, why should the country not be cured of this serious affliction, caused by certain media outlets? If there is a diagnosis and a specific disease the country suffers from, why shouldn't the country be cured of it? Those who oppose this must have a specific interest in preventing the country from resting and living in a regime of polarization, hatred, and lies. Of course, this does not align with the interests of society; on the contrary, it is in the interest of Georgian society to regulate and organize all of this. The draft law, which will be registered in the Parliament of Georgia, is dedicated to this very goal," Irakli Kobakhidze said.

For reference, the chairman of the "Georgian Dream" faction, Mamuka Mdinaradze, stated that the ruling team is starting work and that the "Media Law" will soon be initiated, which will be adopted according to the British model and legislation.

According to him, the law will establish standards for media objectivity and journalistic ethics.

Mdinaradze said that the institutional mechanisms for monitoring and protecting these standards will be defined.

Michał Kobosko - we hope that your government eventually would either choose the European way, the democratic way or would resign seeing the number, the size and scale of the citizens' protests
