Giorgi Baramidze: Zurabishvili’s new platform is not really new, except for its name - Zurabishvili wanted to be the leader of all democratic parties, but she failed. We believe that through a united struggle, we will achieve much more and much faster

Zurabishvili’s new platform is not really new, except for its name. Time has shown us that Salome Zurabishvili wanted to be the leader of all democratic parties but, unfortunately, she failed.

This statement was made by Giorgi Baramidze, one of the leaders of "Unity - United National Movement," in a Facebook post.

Baramidze also notes that Zurabishvili has her supporters and followers. He emphasizes that the United National Movement respects her supporters and all those who believe that Salome Zurabishvili should lead the fight against the Russian regime. Therefore, taking into account the interests of the country and Georgian society, his party is ready to cooperate with such political forces and their leaders.

According to Baramidze, his party’s goal is the unity of all democratic and patriotic forces.

"There is a lot of speculation about what the UNM’s position is on Salome Zurabishvili's new platform. But her new platform is not really new, apart from its name.

Time has shown us that Salome Zurabishvili wanted to be the leader of all democratic parties but, unfortunately, she failed because she did not or could not take the right steps.

If you want to be a leader of people (or political forces), the essential condition is to first be their comrade-in-arms. Being a comrade-in-arms means mutual respect.

We all saw that Ms. Salome never considered the UNM as an ally and never showed respect for our team. More than that, she never even recognized the founder and undisputed leader of the UNM, the third President of Georgia, Mikheil Saakashvili, as a political prisoner. Not to mention that she once had the power to use the clemency mechanism to free him from Putin’s captivity.

Had she done this, Ivanishvili’s puppet judges would not have been able to apply the principle of sentence accumulation and give Mikheil Saakashvili 12.5 years in prison. So saying, ‘It doesn’t matter that she didn’t pardon him,’ is meaningless.

Despite this, we put aside our emotions and disagreements and participated in all meetings and consultations of Ms. Zurabishvili’s platform.

Undoubtedly, Ms. Zurabishvili has her supporters and followers. For months, she has been talking about creating her own party.

We respect her supporters and all those who believe that Salome Zurabishvili should lead the fight against the Russian regime. Just as we respect any person or political leader who takes even the smallest real step to defeat the Russian, treacherous, and criminal regime.

Therefore, out of respect and in consideration of the interests of the country and Georgian society, we will cooperate with all such political forces and their leaders.

We also remain committed to the principles of the "Georgian Charter," which we signed.

At the same time, I want to remind everyone that in terms of the fight against the regime, our vision and goals were set and voiced long ago by Mikheil Saakashvili.

Our goal is the unity of all democratic and patriotic forces.

We believe that through a united struggle, we will achieve much more and much faster. Our society also demands unity.

It was in recognition of unity as our main path that we even changed the official legal name of the UNM to "Unity - United National Movement."

Unfortunately, neither before nor after the elections has it been possible to achieve unity among the main political parties.

Neither could the process led by Salome Zurabishvili accomplish this.

Moreover, Ms. Zurabishvili recently stated that "the idea of unity was planted" from outside.

Clearly, with such an attitude, she neither worked on nor could have worked on opposition unity. The result is evident.

A lot of valuable time has been lost.

The Georgian people’s protests have not yet achieved their desired results. Our society is disappointed and rightfully criticizes all opposition parties and leaders.

But it is also not the case that our society’s efforts have been meaningless and without results.

It is thanks to public protests that Ivanishvili’s treacherous gang has not been recognized by any respectable international actor, no one has entered his so-called parliament, Georgia’s friendly states have imposed sanctions on the regime, and more.

So we should not fall into despair or say that nothing will work or that the struggle is pointless.

It does have meaning, and results will come, and I believe that we will achieve a common victory.

Despite all obstacles and difficulties, the UNM will continue the fight to save Georgia. Our team will also definitely cooperate with all healthy, patriotic forces in the country.

At the same time, despite the traitorous regime’s attempts to persecute and dissolve the UNM, we will continue to reform and strengthen the party.

The UNM is an idea.

The UNM is our people, whom Mikheil Saakashvili united around this idea.

The UNM’s idea is to build a united, strong, democratic, developed, truly Georgian, and therefore European state. A country integrated into NATO and the EU.

No to the traitorous criminal regime!

Freedom for Misha and all other political prisoners of Ivanishvili’s gang!

Glory to Georgia!" Baramidze writes.
