Vladimir Putin has signed a decree simplifying the process of obtaining Russian citizenship for the population of occupied Abkhazia and the Tskhinvali region, Russian media reports, referring to the document posted on the website of legal acts.

According to the document signed by Russian President Vladimir Putin, knowledge of the Russian language and Russian history will no longer be required for the population of occupied Abkhazia and Tskhinvali to apply for Russian citizenship.

“The government establishes a procedure for issuing a passport of a citizen of the Russian Federation on the territory of the Russian Federation to persons in respect of whom a decision has been made in accordance with this decree, which provides for the possibility of issuing it, including on the territories of the Republic of Abkhazia and the Republic of South Ossetia,” reads the document.

According to the document, people living in occupied Abkhazia and Tskhinvali will be able to submit applications to the so-called diplomatic missions of Russia.

In addition, those people who already live in Russia can apply to the territorial body of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs at their place of residence.
