The British Embassy is not disclosing to the Georgian public who it was funding and with what amounts ahead of the 2024 elections, or who it is funding today — this was stated by the Speaker of Parliament, Shalva Papuashvili, in a post on social media.
According to Papuashvili, funding propaganda and extremism in another country constitutes a violation of international law.
“To understand it clearly: the British Embassy said that the NGO associated with the number five on the United National Movement’s party list, Gia Japaridze — ‘Academy for the Future’ — were ‘objective election observers,’ and that they simply wanted to provide them with funding, claiming it had nothing to do with funding extremism.
Meanwhile, a week has passed since I addressed the British Embassy, asking it to make public who it funded and in what amount ahead of the 2024 elections, and who it is funding today and with how much. However, in violation of the Paris Declaration on International Aid and the 'UK–Georgia Strategic Partnership and Cooperation Agreement,' the British Embassy is not disclosing this information to the Georgian public. Funding propaganda and extremism in another country is a violation of international law,” writes Papuashvili.
