Shalva Papuashvili said: “It is understandable that there are current relations between Iran and the United States; however, I would call on everyone not to use the territory of Georgia and their presence in Georgia to settle their relations with one another,” referring to a statement by the Iranian ambassador in Georgia.
He added that the government achieves its desired goals through political decisions and dialogue, and that today Georgia is a successful country both economically and politically.
“There was a meeting at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Of course, this was also discussed. You can ask the Ministry of Foreign Affairs specifically what was discussed. In general, I can say that Georgia is not a place where countries should resolve their relations with one another. It is understandable that there is such a desire or even a goal, and it is understandable given the current relations between Iran and the United States. However, I would urge everyone not to use Georgia’s territory or their presence in Georgia to resolve their mutual relations. Georgia’s policy of peace is clear to everyone,” Papuashvili said.
According to him, the government’s main priority is for Georgia to peacefully navigate the crisis currently taking place in the Middle East.
“Just as in other cases, whether related to Ukraine or other crises and wars that have unfortunately occurred and continue to occur around us, and likely will in the future, our main goal is for Georgia to pass through all these processes peacefully. Using appropriate instruments, political decisions, dialogue, and communication, you can see that we are achieving this, and today we are a successful country both economically and politically,” he said.
He also noted that relations with diplomats are determined by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs based on specific needs, citing the example of the German ambassador, who, according to him, was summoned because communication had become impossible.
“Sometimes discussions take place without formal visits. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs determines the forms, relations, and discussions based on the needs that exist. We had many discussions with the European Union and some other countries before it became necessary to summon the German ambassador. For the first time in history, as you know, a serving ambassador was summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs because communication had become impossible and we could no longer explain our concerns regarding violations of the Vienna Convention. Therefore, many other types of discussions had taken place before that. For us, the main thing is the goal - for Georgia to peacefully go through any crisis around us, and we achieve this goal every time,” Papuashvili said.
For context, the Iranian ambassador to Georgia, Seyed Ali Mojani, stated that he held a meeting at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia, noting that the discussion was constructive.
Previously, the ambassador posted a statement on social media, saying that when some countries, either unintentionally or hastily, allow external actors into their space and territory, they will eventually pay the price for it.
