A resistance movement is needed to be prepared, not a cry that something will happen on its own. This requires people with strategic vision and great courage, - reads a letter of the third president of Georgia.
Mikheil Saakashvili explains how and why the National Movement was created.
“This is exactly what is happening today, do you know how and why the National Movement was created?
In 2001, my friend and a very good journalist, Giorgi Sanaia (Vakho’s brother), was killed. A lot of people took to the streets to protest and demanded Shevardnadze’s resignation. It was a spontaneous and unorganized protest, which was suppressed and washed away on the 3rd day.
It was then that I told Levan Berdzenishvili that we should establish a common people's movement, with the aim of bringing about a revolution, and that's how the UNM was formed, which had a lot of activists in the regions who knew that they had to bring about a revolution. We created a school in Tskhvarichamia, where we taught all the activists the tactics of revolution.
I had no illusions that Shevardnadze and the corrupt establishment would cede power without a revolution. Patarkatsishvili and Ivanishvili were already in ambush. Gia Chanturia (the head of the oil company) himself wanted to replace the Shevardnadze family, but after they rigged our elections, as expected, the revolutionary scenario thwarted their plans, but for this, this resistance movement is a preparation, not a cry that something will happen by itself. This requires people with strategic vision and great courage," Saakashvili wrote.
